Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Delhi to Shimla

Kickstart your trip with a long drive from Delhi to Shimla, covering around 350 kilometers via NH1 and the Himalayan Expressway. Currently, road-widening between Chandigarh and Shimla can stretch your journey to about 10-11 hours.
If you prefer public transport, HRTC runs regular buses from ISBT Delhi to Shimla. Alternatively, travel to Kalka and board the famous Shimla Toy Train for a unique experience.

Day 2: Shimla Local Sightseeing

Spend your first full day exploring Shimla’s charm:

The Ridge – Popular hub for events and fairs.

Mall Road – Ideal for shopping and dining.

Christ Church – One of India’s oldest churches.

Scandal Point – With panoramic views.

Jakhu Hill – Hike up for a breathtaking view and visit the giant 108-feet Lord Hanuman statue.

State Museum – Explore Himachal’s rich culture and history.

If traveling in your own vehicle, take your time soaking in Shimla’s colonial beauty.

Day 3: Excursion to Narkanda via Kufri

On this day, embark on a scenic drive towards Narkanda, passing through Kufri. Visit Sutlej Point for a delightful lunch and head up to Hatu Peak for mesmerizing valley views.
Return to Shimla by evening.

Note: If using public transport, it’s advisable to spend this day visiting Shimla’s nearby attractions instead, as reaching Narkanda and returning could be tedious.

Day 4: Shimla to Manali

Prepare for another scenic journey! The drive to Manali via Tattapani is incredibly beautiful, though slightly longer. Relax and enjoy the landscapes along the way.

Day 5: Explore Manali

Dedicate the day to soaking in Manali’s local attractions:

Hadimba Temple

Nehru Kund

Vashist Hot Springs

Museum of Himachal Culture and Folk Art

Manu Temple

Gauri Shankar Temple

Jagatipatt Temple

Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery

Important: Arrange your Rohtang Pass permit in advance to avoid long waiting times. You can either apply online or visit the local DC office.

Day 6: Manali to Keylong

This day offers the most scenic drive of your trip!
Travel up to Rohtang Pass and descend into the beautiful Lahaul Valley, reaching Keylong. If you wish, drive a little further to Jispa and stay at one of the riverside campsites.

This stretch is often overlooked but highly recommended for its stunning beauty.

Day 7: Keylong to Manali via Baralacha La

Start early and visit Jispa, then drive to Baralacha La Pass and see the stunning Suraj Tal. After spending some time there, retrace your route back to Manali via Rohtang Pass.

Day 8: Relax in Manali or Explore Nearby

You have three excellent options for your final day:

Stroll around Mall Road and shop for souvenirs.

Trek to Bhrigu Lake from Gulaba (moderate 6 km trek).

Plan a day trip to Gurudwara Manikaran Sahib or spend the day in Kasol, Parvati Valley.

Day 9: Manali to Delhi

Time to head back. Begin early as the journey to Delhi (around 550 km) can be long. Enjoy your memories and start planning your next adventure!

Accommodation in Shimla and Manali

Both Shimla and Manali offer a wide range of hotels, resorts, and guesthouses — catering to every budget.
While many travelers prefer booking accommodations on the spot after exploring options firsthand, pre-booking during peak seasons (summer holidays, Christmas, New Year) is highly recommended for a hassle-free experience.

Winter Trip to Shimla and Manali

Traveling between November and April?
Keep in mind that Rohtang Pass remains closed during winters, making access to Lahaul Valley impossible.
You can use these extra days to visit nearby attractions like Manikaran Sahib or the scenic Parvati Valley.
Also, snowfall can make driving risky — it’s safer to hire local taxis familiar with snowy routes.

Pack heavy woolens, thermals, gloves, and waterproof jackets for this time of year.
Note: Shimla and Manali see a huge tourist influx during Christmas and New Year, so plan early!

Road Conditions

Delhi to Shimla and Manali: Roads are mostly good with occasional rough patches.

Rohtang Pass and Lahaul Valley: Roads can be challenging, especially after rains.

Manikaran Route: Expect narrow, rough stretches.

Mandi to Chandigarh: Heavy truck traffic can slow you down.

Drive cautiously, especially during monsoons or winters.

What to Pack

Summer: Light cottons and a light jacket if visiting Lahaul Valley.
Monsoon: Raincoats, waterproof shoes, quick-dry clothes.
Winter: Heavy woolens, thermals, gloves, mufflers, and snow boots.
